“I was surprised to find how many of the details involved in teaching using this method were things that many teachers would not think of on their own.” William S. Mahavier, Mentoring the Moore Method.
“I think that your tutelage with using the Moore method helped me to be more confident in the classroom, in addition to being a better teacher, which in turn helped me to excite the students and that led me to working with some of them and writing some papers.” Ron Taylor, Berry College, to William “Ted” Mahavier and Ed Parker.
The purpose of the R.L. Moore Mentoring Program is to provide advice, support, and encouragement to those interested in using the Moore Method in their teaching. Individuals who request assistance are paired with mentors who are experienced practitioners of the Moore Method. Typically, mentoring is conducted by e-mail, however arrangements such as on-site visits, sabbaticals, and summer workshops have also been used successfully.
In addition to the mentoring program, The Educational Advancement Foundation provides a variety of resources to assist those interested in using the Moore Method. An extensive variety of materials available from EAF include A Quick-Start Guide to the Moore Method, guides and notes for courses taught by the Moore Method, and reports on mentoring experiences. A collection of guides and notes for Moore Method courses can also be found in the on-line Journal of Inquiry-Based Learning in Mathematics EAF provides grants to support mentoring, course development, and other projects promoting inquiry-based learning (see guidelines for grant applications).
