The Educational Advancement Foundation's Board, Staff, Legacy Policy Group Members, and Friends were saddened by the death of Ben Fitzpatrick on November 11, 2000. His passing has left a worldwide void in the mathematics community that cannot be filled. Since 1996, Dr. Fitzpatrick was the driving force behind the Legacy of R. L. Moore Project; indeed he was the “Father” of the Legacy of R. L. Moore Project. He was an expert in research and the teaching of mathematics, particularly regarding the "Moore Method".
Through his insight and leadership, the Project moved forward significantly. His dedication to improving the R.L. Moore, H.J. Ettlinger, and H.S. Wall archives at The Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin will provide abundant resources and great enjoyment to all who use them. Such archives house his numerous oral interviews with important and noteworthy mathematicians in America and abroad-as well as video presentations of some of these interviews-his participation in various conferences, and his numerous photographic contributions.
We do miss this generous, gentle friend.
